Sony has announced the launch of a new class of Home Projector, the VPL-VW1000ES which beams video onto your wall in stunning 4K quality.
What is 4K? We hear you ask. Well, 4K is a standard of picture that until now has been used in Cinemas such as the fantastic IMAX theatres. A 4K picture is four times the size and resolution of the Full HD (1080p) you’re used to on your home telly.
Sony’s new projector will beam an image onto a wall or backdrop with a resolution of 4096 x 2160 with 8.65 megapixels. To put that into comparison, Full HD is a resolution of 1920 x 1080 with 2.1 megapixels.
The VPL-VW1000ES projector is capable of producing 4K quality pictures with a stunning dynamic contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. This technology means Sony have squeezed more pixels into an image, resulting in a clearer, more detailed and more realistic picture than you’ll ever see on a HD TV.
You won’t need to have content in 4K quality either, as this projector is capable of upscaling Full HD content into 4K resolutions easily. Plug your Blu-Ray player, Games Console or DVD player into the projector and hit play and you’ll have Cinema quality pictures at home. Just make sure you have a big enough wall or backdrop to project it onto!
It’s also capable of projecting 3D films in Full HD 1080p quality as well as upscaling some 3D content to 4K quality.
For any projector buffs out there, the VPL-VW1000ES flaunts a 0.74-inch 4K SXRD panel which is designed for minimal light reflection. Each pixel has been reduced in size from 7μm to 4μm, meaning more pixels can be crammed into the overall picture, resulting in more detail and a more realistic image.
Sony’s press release for the projector reads: “Last year at IFA, Sony released its first 3D home projector, the VPL-VW90ES, and in June of this year, the VPL-HW30ES projector joined the line as a high-performance, entry-level 3D model. Most recently, the VPL-VW95ES was announced at IFA as a mid-level 3D home projector option. And today with its truly advanced resolution, the new VPL-VW1000ES 4K home theatre projector delivers on the promise of the future of home entertainment – today.”
The VPL-VW1000ES is expected to go on sale later this year, though neither a price nor official release date have been set.
