Spotify is now a week old for our American friends and from what we’ve seen on twitter and other social networks they are loving it.
Spotify has declared the launch a massive success and that it has exceeded their expectations – with the music streaming software reportedly attracting 70,000 paying subscribers in little over a week.
The figures come from Billboard Magazine, who claim that they have spoken to some of the labels who have all but confirmed the software’s stellar start stateside.
Spotify isn’t ready to talk figures just yet, but they were willing to do a bit gloating about the success they have had in just 7 days.
“The launch of Spotify in the U.S. has exceeded our expectations in both the response to invitations for the free service as well as subscriptions,” Spotify told Billboard.
“We aren’t going to discuss numbers at this state but we are excited to be here and confident that Americans will love Spotify as much as they already do in Europe.”
If you compared the figure to Rhapsody, which launch in 2001, they have round 800,000 paying users. Napster, on the other hand have 761,000 subscribers at the last count, and Rdio is believed to have fewer than 100,000 paying customers. In other words, Spotify is off to a great start.
It is widely expected that Spotify will provide Facebook with their music streaming service, in exchange for Facebook giving them mass market exposure to their 750 million users. No official announcement between the 2 has been made but it has been confirmed they are negotiating.
Previously Spotify had only been available to European residents, with a large user base of 10 million, with 1.6 million paying for the service.
