New Super Mario Bros 2 to Introduce Paid Downloadable Content to Nintendo 3DS

The New Super Mario Bros series gets an update on both Nintendo brands this year and we’ve already spent a little time covering the latest addition to the Wii U home console, so now we’ll tell you a little bit more about the sequel to the 2006 DS title which arrives for the current Nintendo 3DS console and the just announced super-sized 3DS XL this August!

Reintroducing the classic side-scrolling style with improved visuals, shading and depth New Super Mario Bros 2 on the Nintendo 3DS will feature the classic platform play in the Mushroom Kingdom that gamers of a certain age will remember fondly and familiar foes will resurface to once again bother gaming’s most popular Brooklyn-born plumber. Start thinking about collecting those coins, which has become more a background challenge in recent times, because as Nintendo of America Boss Reggie Fils-Aime told us at the recent E3 Expo – “this one’s all about the gold” – and he wasn’t joking.

The aim of the game is to gather as many of the floating gold coins as possible and there will be plenty, in varying sizes and values. The gold theme continues with new items including a block of gold with fuses to Mario’s head – a power which is still a much a mystery – as well as classic weapons such as the fire flower which now packs an even greater whallop and encases Mario totally in gold. Classic baddies such as Koopa Troopers and Goombas also appear in gold and offer higher value coins and surely to the delight of PETA – the Tanooki suit from SMB3 is back! New Super Mario Bros 2 on the 3DS will also be the first Nintendo-developed title that will feature paid downloadable content from the Nintendo eShop. But at the moment what exactly will be available is unknown until the completion of the main game is over.

New Super Mario Bros 2 is released in the U.K on August 17th and you can see the gold rush fever for yourself in the E3 launch trailer below!
