Nokia have taken a massive leap of faith putting WP7 on their next line of high end handsets, although good the OS has struggles so far to claw any of the market share from Android and IOS. Nokia very nearly went with Meego and although untested It would have been massively popular with developers and more than likely had a better shot at winning over some of the crowd.
Nokia have so far released the not so innovative Lumia 710 and Lumia 800. Although good build quality and hardware, the devices do not differ much from the current line of WP7 devices and Nokia seemed to be pinning their hopes on some Nokia specific apps, Music, Maps and Drive. These apps however will now run on any developer unlocked WP7 device, bummer for Nokia.
But Nokia may have an ace up their sleeve. Info about the Nokia Champage has leaked on its was to AT&T over in the states, the info gives the build number the Champagne will be running, and as you can see below that is a Tango Build number.
Tango should only be a minor update to the Mango release that has came out recently. It will however give the ability for video calling using the front facing camera on some of the more recent WP7 devices, It will also allow the software to be more friendly on lower-mid range hardware and bring support to more screen resolutions.
There are some rumors that state the Nokia Champagne is just the LTE enabled version of the Lumia 800 making it 4G enabled, but the Lumia is by no means a mid range handset.
So this might be Nokia’s secret weapon however a minor update is still not going o differentiate Nokia from the other WP7 devices, I think Nokia might have made the wrong choice in choosing Wp7.
