In this article, we’ll be looking at five of the best apps available for iOS when you’re travelling. Whether it’s checking your flights, booking a train or just chilling in a Hadrian’s Wall bed and breakfast, these apps will give you a reason to pack that world travel adapter and keep your smartphone powered. Let’s get right to the apps.

5. National Rail Enquiries – Free

This app is typical of those offered by national railways, although this particular one is localised for the UK. There is a wide range of functionality available – you can plan rail journeys between any two British stations, follow trains as they’re in motion and find out about service disruptions. There’s even a clever ‘wake me up’ alarm that warns you when your stop is getting close.

4. Trip Journal – £1.99

Trip Journal is a rather clever app that allows you to create a digital scrapbook whilst you’re on holiday or travelling. The app allows you to add photos, videos and text, all tied into the date, time and location that you added them. The finished scrapbook can be shared with friends on Facebook, Flickr or Twitter.

3. Passbook – Not yet released

This app is a unique entry on the list, as it hasn’t been released yet. Part of the forthcoming iOS 6 update, the app promises to store all of your digital tickets, boarding passes and merchant cards. Passbook provides a very attractive interface, as well as automatically updated information and context-sensitive selections.

2. Just Landed – Free

There are clever apps and there are beautiful apps. Just Landed is that rare combination of both, providing easy to use flight tracking and alerts with an almost absurdly beautiful interface, complete with nice infographics, animations and perfect proportions.

1. TripAdvisor – Free

The owl knows – this legendary travel app is one of the best on the market, allowing you to see at a glance nearby attractions, restaurants and hotels. All of these include user ratings and reviews, making it easy to steer clear of tourist traps and ripoffs. We used it when staying at that Hadrian’s Wall cottage mentioned earlier, and even out in the country it proved to be an essential resource.

Conclusion

So there we have it – five brilliant travel apps for iOS. We hope you’ve found something new out of the list – if you’ve got any suggestions, we’d love to hear them in the comments below. Thanks for reading and safe travels!
