The Toshiba TG01 gets some Windows Phone 7 love

  • by

The development world never sleeps, especially the mobile phone development world. We are always getting some new goodies on one handset or another and today it’s the turn of the Toshiba TG01.

The handset was brought out to rival the always impressive HTC HD2, and sported a screen of similar size, a 1GHz processor and Windows Mobile 6.5 OS. Unfortunately the device had a resistive touch screen, taking away some of the hype for the handset.

But after a long time on the sidelines the TG01 has shown its face again, this time dropping the old Windows Mobile 6.5, in favour of the increasingly popular Windows Phone 7.  It’s not running the latest version of Windows Phone – Mango 7.5 – but the fact that this is the second legacy device to make the switch must be a kick in the teeth for Microsoft after they stated that no old devices could run the OS, and now we have 2.

The software port is a little buggy, but unlike the HD2 port, no new bootloader is required and the WP7 ROM can be flashed in a similar way to the old Windows Mobile ROMs. You can also unlock the port using the good old chevron un-locker, which was made when WP7 first came out, allowing the side-loading of apps.

It has been a busy couple of weeks for all developers alike, with Ice Cream Ssandwich SDK ports coming thick and fast as well. This just shows that old Windows Mobile devices have not been left behind just yet. You can check out the port here, and as always we will keep you up to date with all the latest info.
