TouchPad Android port nears completion

  • by

The lucky owners of the HP TouchPad who snapped one up for less than £100 are soon going to be in for a treat, as the Cyanogen Mod team have just posted a video showing the TouchPad now has hardware acceleration, allowing 3D games to run as smoothly as they would on a native Android Device.

This news comes just a couple of days after the team let us know that they had got working sound, accelerometer and Wi-Fi. What this means is that the project is coming along nicely and you can monitor the progress on the team’s Wiki page here.

The port is still not ready for the public and the Cyanogen Mod team have said they will not release a ROM until it is stable enough for daily use. I for one am very excited with the developments as there would seem to be very little left to do to get a working daily build. The achievements so far have been amazing and the speed it has been accomplished is also fantastic.

Cyanogen Mod were not the only team trying to get Android running on the TouchPad; Touch-Droid were also working on porting Android to the TouchPad but they have recently disbanded.

There are however some who love Web OS that much that they do not want to lose it, and there will hopefully be some duel boot options available, there is also a team working on a app player (like the one on the Blackberry Playbook) for Web OS meaning that you can keep all the goodness of web OS while gaining the full features of the Android market.
