Micro-blog social site Twitter has celebrated its fifth year in service with a new record for the most tweets sent per second, this during the finals of the Women’s World Cup tournament – with 7,166 counted while the United States fell to Japan in a penalty shoot-out.
To say Women’s football isn’t anywhere near as popular as the men’s would be a gross misconception – looking back at the influx of tweets during the last World Cup final the number was “only” 2000 per second. This, at the time, set the record which was later pushed to 3,051 during the last 15 minutes of the match.
Recent landmarks for large surges from worldwide tweetards using their 140-characters-or-less on desktop machine and mobile app include the death of Osama Bin Laden, which peaked at 5,106 tweets per second, and the Superbowl which reached 6,339 “TPS”.
In other Twitter / football news, David and Victoria Beckham’s latest team member Harper Seven, made her debut via the mini-status site with a series of pictures of “”Daddy’s little girl!”
