Got a funny joke to tweet about that certain footballer at the centre of the recent Twitter scandal and “super-injunction”? Think again – as now you could end up getting yourself nicked!
Twitter are more than willing to pass over any information on tweetards who break the gagging order to the police on request.
The twit hit the fan when a publicity hungry C-List celeb teased at a secret affair between themself and the married top soccer star in a series of tweets but was outted by sneaky Lib Dem MP John Hemming who took advantage of his Parlimentary privileges and named the Premier League Playa, leading to the current Twitter gag protecting the footie icon.
The social site’s European boss Tony Wang, speaking from Paris at the e-G8 Forum, says “Platforms have a responsibility, not to defend that user but to protect that user’s right to defend him or herself” adding “”Let them exercise their own legal rights under their own jurisdiction, whether that is a motion to quash the order or to oppose it or do a number of other things to defend themselves”
However, we don’t think much will come from this and presumably it’s just a threat to keep twit-addicts schtum. Over 750,000 users have mentioned “you know who’s” name since the scandal broke, so it’ll be a massive job to enforce the law on those breaking the silence.
If you do have a good one that’ll make your mates LOL, we would recommend you keep it to yourself or tell it down the pub rather than boast about it on the social micro-blog – There’s a tiny chance you could be getting yourself a visit from the fuzz!
