Nokia is currently announcing a whole host of new Windows devices today, with the company announcing not one but two new smartphones and the long-rumoured first Nokia Windows RT 8.1 running tablet device in the form of the Lumia 2520.
But along with these big devices Nokia is also taking the stage at Nokia World to announce some big apps and services that will be coming to the Windows Phone 8 operating system in the next few months.
As part of Nokia and Microsoft’s expansion of the Windows Phone 8 OS, Nokia announced that both Instagram and Vine will be coming to the WP8 OS in the coming weeks, adding a new layer of picture and video sharing and social networking to the Windows operating system.
A dedicated Instagram app for WP8 will be released in “the coming weeks” but that’s as far as it goes with the word on specific dates. Twitter’s six-second video app Vine is also coming to Microsoft’s OS in the next few days.
What’s more, after the launch of the Lumia 2520, a device which will have a Windows RT version of the popular news and social reading app Flipboard, the company has also promised a version of the app for Windows Phone 8 users as well.
“Today, we’re excited for everyone to see Flipboard on the new Nokia Lumia 2520,” said Eric Feng, CTO, Flipboard.
“Nokia, with their commitment to creating world-class user experiences, was a key partner for us bringing Flipboard to the Windows 8 platform for the first time. Lumia 2520 users can instantly read their favourite news or create their own Flipboard magazines on any topic imaginable. We look forward to bringing Flipboard to Lumia smartphones in the coming months.”
So that’s a big boost for Windows Phone 8 fans who have been waiting for some of these big name apps for quite some time. Nokia hasn’t given clear dates just yet, though both Instagram and Vine are expected to come along any time now.
