OFCOM awarded the usage to the mega network, which has the ability to share both the T-Mobile and Orange network cells and service between both networks customers and therefore have the largest network in the UK.
From 11 September, Everything Everywhere, will be able to roll-out 4G mobile services to its customers which will enable super-fast mobile phone access which will mean faster download speeds for mobile devices.
However the September date does not mean that Orange or T-Mobile will start to launch new products and services on that date as the company will still need to setup their infrastructure as well as work on a range of devices that run the 4G service as part of their build. 4G enabled handsets are available in the US so you can expect that T-Mobile and Orange will start there with shipping over those devices to the UK.So awaiting these changes will take a while but we will expect Orange or T-Mobile to be launching a new range of 4G enabled products and services to the UK by Christmas time 2012.
Everything Everywhere spokesperson stated: “Ofcom’s decision to make 4G available this year is great news for the UK,”
“Consumers will soon be able to benefit from the much greater mobile speeds that 4G will deliver. 4G will drive investment, employment and innovation and we look forward to making it available later this year, delivering superfast mobile broadband to the UK.”
As can be expected a few of the other British networks are not to happy about the decision with Vodafone being the most verbal by coming out and stating:
“We are frankly shocked that Ofcom has reached this decision, the regulator has shown a careless disregard for the best interests of consumers, businesses and the wider economy.”
One other thing to note is the September 11th release date will also coincide with the release of the iPhone 5, where 4G technologies has been long rumoured in the US… but that may just be one speculation too far!
Either way we are excited to finally be experiencing what our US cousins have in ultra-fast Mobile download speeds.
