Latest Xbox 720 details reveal that the new Miscrosoft console has been mysteriously codenamed ‘loop’. Whether this is a reference to the shape of the device isn’t clear, but apparently the console will be smaller, cheaper and optimized for use withMicrosoft’s motion-sensing camera, Kinect.
Apparently the Loop’s internal components will feature a modified Windows 9 core, with an additional ARM-based processor with dedicated assisting cores which each deal with one of the Loop’s main functions, such as graphics, AI, physics, sound, networking, encryption and sensors. It’s a highly specialized system that makes sure that each function is allocated it’s own ool of processing power.
Blogger and internet source MS Nerd, the finder of the new information commented that the Loop will “demonstrate how Windows Phone could possible [sic] implement Win9’s dev platform on the lower end,”
The name has attracted a bit of attention with regards to the uninspiredness of the ‘Loop’ moniker. Microsoft’s launch name for the device will probably change to reflect whatever the company thinks the device represents, so be on the look out for a newly named Loop in the future.
No launch details for the Loop have been given as of yet, but rumor, speculation and other internet based mutterings have the release pegged for 2015 – a full 3 years after 2012, a year thought by many to be the one that hails the end of the current console generation. More basis for a 2015 release came after Microsoft announced that the older Xbox 360 would have a 10 year long lifespan after its 2005 release.
Internet source MS Nerd didn’t drop any hints as to where the information on Loop came from, but the blog he runs has attracted media attention and a reputation for being a valid source of Microsoft information, so we’re inclined to believe it.
