Nikon briefly published, and then removed details on their US site of a brand new AF-S NIKKOR 50mm F/1.8G lens which comes complete with a Silent Wave focusing motor.
The new lens which has yet to be officially announced will allow autofocus on all Nikon entry-level DSLR bodies, so this includes the latest D5100 and also the D3100. The lens should also work with both FX and DX series models as well.
Now if you’re a Nikon user, I’m sure you’ll already be aware of the fact that there is already a 50mm prime lens available, however it couldn’t easily be used with entry-level models as these lacked the required built-in auto focus sensor.
This lens also features a new optical design which means there are now 7 elements in 6 groups, instead of 6 elements in 5 groups, including one aspherical element which can reduce optical aberrations – a first for any 50mm F1.8 lens, thus allowing you to produce even better results than its predecessor.
