The news last week was that both Microsoft and Facebook were in discussions with Skype on a possible buy-out, although the latest information filtering through suggests that it’s Microsoft that may have the more appealing offer with a deal that is reported to be around the $7-8 billion mark.
This latest news comes from the folk over at WSJ who also say that it’s quite possible that this deal will be announced sometime this week. If it happens to go ahead, it will be the biggest purchase by Microsoft to date.
Microsoft primary goal is to increase its online presence; currently the majority of Microsoft’s revenue is from software sales, although should the company go ahead with the acquisition of Skype it will no doubt open many more revenue streams, as the company look to tackle some of its biggest competitors – Apple and Google.
