Google aims to make online picture finding simpler and more visual with its popular search engine with the addition of an image “Sorting” feature.
Google Images will still function in a fashion we’re familiar with – seeking out pictures of relevance to your search area and displaying them in no particular order. But now you’ll notice an extra bit on the side which allows you to “Sort by subject” – when selected this will allow you to refine your search by sorting your finds more specifically.
For a simplified example – searching for “smartphone” you’ll be presented by thousands and thousands of confusing generalised images. Changing the sorting option to the new subject setting will present you with smartphones by make – “nokia smartphone” “iphone smartphone” and “blackberry smartphone” etc. With an option to view “More like this” when you’ve found the right subject – a much easier browsing experience we think you’ll agree.
Google says “Sorting by subject uses algorithms that identify relationships among images found on the web and presents those images in visual groups, expanding on the technology developed for Google Similar Images and Google Image Swirl”
This is a really helpful feature for Google Images and it’s available to use in the UK now – with the new tweak dropping worldwide over the coming days. After years of trawling for the right image Google have provided a solution – and it’s looking good!
