Samsung have just announced a new super-high resolution 10.1-inch screen aimed directly at tablet manufacturers, and we think it could be the screen panel used in Apple’s next iPad.
Together with their manufacturing partner Nuovoyance, Samsung today announced the release of a new 10.1-inch WQXGA panel which utilises Nuovoyance’s “PenTile” technology. We’ve just learnt about PenTile technology ourselves, so we’ll fill you in on it. PenTile displays give a sharper, brighter image all while being kind to your device’s battery.
Samsung claim that thanks to the PenTile technology, their new panels will use 40% less power. Samsung’s Senior VP of Electronics, Dr Sungtae Shin said “Samsung’s PenTile display technology is the only display technology that operates at 40 percent less power yet provides twice that of Full HD-viewing performance for consumers compared to legacy RGB stripe LCDs.” He goes on to say “There is no other commercial display technology on the market today that offers this high of a resolution and pixel density in a 10.1-inch size display.”
The new display features one of the highest pixel density values and resolutions around today, rivalling Apple’s Retina Display. To put that into figures, it features a maximum resolution of a whopping 2560 x 1440 pixels and 300 dpi (Dots per Inch). In perspective, the display currently used on the iPad 2 has a resolution of 1024 × 768 pixels. With Samsung already supplying Apple screen panels for the iPad 2, could Samsung be gearing up to provide the screens for the next iPad?
Commercial production of this new breed of LCD screen should start later this year according to Samsung. Just in time for the iPad 3? Who knows.
