Meet the Toshiba Thrive: a Honeycomb 3.1 Tablet

  • by

We’ve heard about a Toshiba Tablet before, but were told it was facing delays earlier this month which would push back its release until later on this year.

This is my next have spoken recently to some Toshiba boffs about the eagerly anticipated tablet device, and have learnt that customers will be able to pre-order the device next week.

Looking very similar to the Japan-only Toshiba Regza Tablet we saw before, the Toshiba “Thrive” will be an Android Honeycomb 3.1 tablet with a 10.1-inch screen. Thanks to having the very latest in Android software, the Thrive will have a function called “USB Host”, which means you’ll be able to plug in a mouse, keyboard, game pad or external hard drive for use with the tablet.

In what is possibly a first for recent Android tablets, the Toshiba Thrive will have a removable and swappable battery – perfect for those who need a longer life from their Tablets. Also onboard are full-sized USB and HDMI ports.

Toshiba have decided to add a few helpful apps such as Quickoffice for word processing, spreadsheets and the like, LogMeIn for remote assistance, a File Manager and some Image Editing tools. There’s no unsightly graphical user interface added on top like you’ll find with products by Acer for example, which is very welcome.

The only downside we can see to the Toshiba Thrive is its thickness; 0.66-inches thick. To put that into some perspective, that’s pretty much twice as thick as the Apple iPad 2.
