Club Nintendo To Close This September After 8 Years

Nintendo has announced that it will be closing the Club Nintendo loyalty scheme which has been running in its current model since 2007.

The Japanese-based gaming company broke the news on its website in UK, Europe and North America among other regions, informing customers worldwide that from April 1st 2015 Nintendo will no longer be including registration cards in their ‘physical’ software and hardware products. Points (or Stars) for these items can no longer be claimed from this date but can still be used to make purchases of rewards and exclusive items in the Nintendo Store. Points from digital downloads will also stop later that month on April 20th 2015.

Members will still be able to view the stars they’ve earned from the Nintendo products bought and registered but are being encouraged to redeem them before September 30th 2015 when Club Nintendo will be no more. Registered users will no longer be able to sign in to their accounts from this date and new registrations will not be accepted.

Nintendo also advised some hardware items packaged before these dates including the New Nintendo 3DS range will still come with Club Nintendo cards in the box but they will no longer be valid – However, any included software (if a bundle) can still be registered until closing date in September.

Club Nintendo evolved from VIP 24:7 and Club Member which launched in 2002 becoming the scheme we know today in 2007. Overall Nintendo’s reward schemes have been in play through the tenure of many of the companies great console’s including Game Boy Advance, Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo DS, Wii, Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. It’s sad to see it end but Nintendo promises something new is in the works to replace Club Nintendo and we would expect an announcement before September – perhaps an indication at this year’s E3 in mid-June.
