Chip maker Qualcomm are a big name in high end processors for mobile phones, with a lot of handsets currently on the market being powered by one of Qualcomm’s chips. The company’s Snapdragon range has proved the most popular. Now the latest iteration of Snapdragon, the Snapdragon 810 chip, has been announced to be included in two highly popular smartphone ranges.
Qualcomm’s latest press release has given users and fans an insight into which manufacturers will be including Snadragon 810 in their latest smartphones. The biggest announcements from the company include the chip going out to Sony Xperia smartphones as well as the next generation of Lumia smartphones.

Whilst the powerhouse chip has had a few setbacks in testing by Samsung on the Galaxy S6, including overheating, Qualcomm is confident that the chip won’t have any problems on upcoming devices. As well as Sony and Microsoft offerings, the chip is set to go out to LG, Xiaomi, Motorola and OPPO devices in the next year.
Those devices will include tablets as well as smartphones, taking advantage of the chip’s unprecedented support for high end graphics and fast video playback. The Snapdragon 810 chip is a high end device set to take center stage in 2015, as on top of great visuals on mobile devices the chip also offers support for the new 4k video standard – meaning ultra HD playback will work very well on devices using the chip.
Other pegged advantages of the chip also include better multitasking, improved audio, surround sound, higher performance during gaming as well as enhanced capture of audio, video and images. The chip uses 8 processor cores to achieve these higher speeds, and internally it includes a mixed bag of four 1.5ghz cores and another four 2.0ghz cores.

Qualcomm also claims in the release that the chip will use less power when performing high performance tasks – when gaming, the internal graphics chip will reportedly perform 30% better using 20% less power. On top of this, batteries will be further spared from depletion during 4k video recording and playback.
It’s not the most exciting part of the mobile phones game, but the consistent parade of hardware and internal gubbins that we see coming out of large manufacturers does let the average user have a sense of perspective – it’s easy to see how things move along simply by comparing processors like the Snapdragon 810 with processors from a couple of years ago. It may seem like a bunch of numbers to some, but it’s not difficult to see that the numbers increase as the years go by.
