HTC’s Chairwoman has spoken out about rumours that the Taiwanese mobile co. are set to snap up Hewlett Packard’s recently discarded WebOS operating software, saying that any purchase of the defunct platform will not be done on ‘impulse’.
Cher Wang was interviewed by The Economic Observer, a Chinese business newspaper, and she addressed the speculation which has been surfacing within the tech community since the HP/WebOS retirement news broke around two weeks ago and confessed that despite some of it being true, any move would not be made in haste:
“We have given it thought and we have discussed it internally, but we will not do it on impulse.” says Wang.
Later adding: “We can use any OS we want. We are able to make things different from our rivals on the second or third layer of a platform. Our strength lies in understanding an OS, but it does not mean that we have to produce an OS.”
Bearing in mind HTC’s dedication to Android is pretty secure – with years of service given and an NYC event for new Google gadgets in just a few days time, as well as the leap over to the Windows Phone 7 is coming (devices such as Radar and Titan already outted) – does the company really have the time for another operating software? We think HTC’s apprehension is not in vain, but will it be too late by the time it makes up its mind? There are plenty of hungry tech makers out there ready to take pick up the scraps..
