Google makes web search more secure

Search giant Google has announced its intentions to give users the ability to make secure safe web searches using the Google search engine.

Google say in a blog post that they have worked hard over the past few years to increase the use of encryption in its services using the SSL protocol, in addition to the company encouraging the industry as a whole to adopt stronger security standards as well.

In January 2010 Google made SSL the default setting for all users of Gmail, while also introducing an encrypted search service four months later with the address https://encrypted.google.com.

In the blog post, Google say that as web search becomes an increasingly customised experience, they say that they recognise the importance of protecting the personalised web search results and therefore will be introducing the new secure Google with the address https://www.google.com (indicated by the “s” at the end of http). Google say that over the next few weeks, users will start to notice that “s” at the end when navigating to the site.

Google are hoping that as the company starts to adopt the SSL standard across more of its products, they will see a similar approach from other prominent web companies on the Internet.
