According to a post on the Android Developers Blog, distribution of Google OS version 2.2 Froyo has finally been eclipsed by its successor 2.3 Gingerbread.
It’s just over a week since the new edition Ice Cream Sandwich was announced along with Google and Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus smartphone and it been around a year since Gingerbread was announced and then appeared on the original Nexus – the HTC Nexus One. It’s been a hard sweat to get the roll out underway with many popular smartphones such as the LG Optimus range just getting its update to version 2.3.
The latest figures from just yesterday reveal that Gingerbread now covers 44.4% of the Android gadgets in use, and Froyo now takes only 40.7%. Tablet-based Honeycomb, still in early days takes a 1.9% of the Android distribution, and appears on the original Motorola Xoom, and it’s just announced follow-up Xoom 2. Interestingly Android 1.5 Cupcake is hanging in there with a diminutive 0.9%.
With Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich just out of the gate, we have to wonder how long it will take for the cool new treat takes to overtake it’s predecessor. With the dual-function operating both smartphone and tablet we don’t think it’ll take that long at all.
