A tweet from Samsung UK has confirmed that the latest tasty update to Google’s mobile OS Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, is on its way to the “World’s Most Powerful Smartphone” – the Galaxy S II.
Or course, this was expected. But confirmation from Samsung means further proof that the Samsung Galaxy S II is still the leading smartphone after being launched in April, running Google’s Android 2.3 software. In addition to delivering the world’s leading mobile operating software, the SGSII brings along a 1.2GHz ARM Cortex processor, 1GB of included RAM with potential for 16 to 32GB on MicroSD, an 8-megapixel shooter and, of course, that Samsung exclusive AMOLED display – all within a slender frame measuring only 8.49mm deep. Updating to Ice Cream Sandwich provides exciting new potentials and opens up a whole new playground for the powerhouse. The tweet confirms, but there is yet to be an announcement on when exactly the software update will become available for the flagship model.
These are stats that will still make ICS launch partner the Samsung Galaxy Nexus blush from its 4.65” Super AMOLED HD display. The new addition to the Samsung range is backed by Google and is optimized to feature Android 4.0 at in its full glory. However the new Nexus’ processor still comes up a little short next to the Samsung’s current juggernaut the Galaxy S II – The Galaxy Nexus packing ‘only’ a 1.2GHz CPU. The new model was set for public sale on November 17th, but that date has been thrown into doubt by Amazon UK, which has postponed the release of its Galaxy Nexus stock until December 2nd.
Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will bring new features such as a fully refreshed interface, face recognition unlock and improved voice commands to the Samsung Galaxy S II. Sony (Ericsson) and HTC have revealed both starting line-ups for when ICS rolls out in early 2012.
