Microsoft Launches Its First iOS Game – Kinectimals for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad

On Tuesday Microsoft released its first ever game for Apple mobile devices. Kinectimals, the hugely popular game for Xbox 360 and Kinect, has made the jump to iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

Microsoft has recently been making a big push with new applications for iOS devices, launching the Xbox LIVE app for iPhone and iPod Touch just last week, and also launching an app for its Cloud Storage service, SkyDrive, yesterday.

Kinectimals is the first game created by Microsoft for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, and works in much the same way as the game for Xbox 360 – though without the motion sensing of course. You visit the island of Lemuria, and there you are free to play with and raise your very own pet.

Microsoft’s app blurb reads as follows:

This irresistible mobile experience gives you the chance to use your phone to visit the island of Lemuria and play with, care for and fall in love with your very own cub.”Bring your pet with you wherever you go! If you’ve already experienced Kinectimals on Kinect for Xbox 360, your phone becomes the key to unlocking five new cubs on your console. Stand-alone mobile game features Kinectimals’ signature visual quality, delightful animation and brand new ways to play with your cub!

Unfortunately those who have the game on Xbox 360 won’t be able to continue their progress on the move using the app, though Microsoft recognises the need for a flowing experience between two different devices, and offers unlockables for playing the app on your iDevice.

The better you do at caring for your new pet on the iOS game, the more you unlock on the Xbox 360 version of the game. You can unlock up to 5 new cubs on the console version of the game, which is pretty cool.

You can download the app for £1.99 or $2.99 right now on any iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, provided you have iOS 4.2 or later. The game is available in English, Japanese and Korean, and is quite a hefty download at 178MB, so remember to download it on WiFi.
