Star Wars: The Old Republic has been launched! The new massively multi-player online role-playing game (and replacement to the long-running fan-favourite Galaxies) blasted off in London’s Oxford Street branch of GAME – where eager gamers were greeted by Ewok performer, Ricky Gervais pal and legend Warwick Davis!
The midnight opening was held last night, but the game isn’t officially on sale until next Tuesday, December 20th. The event saw stormtroopers of the 501st Legion (the worldwide Star Wars cosplay group) acting as security and even the Dark Lord himself, Darth Vader was spotted ruling over the proceedings. Those dedicated to the Jedi ways were out in force to grab them self an early edition of the new Star Wars game from developer BioWare for personal computers. The Old Republic is set in the expanded universe of the LucasFilms saga with never before seen storylines and masses of interactivity with familiar characters and fellow players.
The new Star Wars title comes in 3 versions: a Standard package for £45, Digital Deluxe Steam Exclusive costing £60 and a truly awesome Collector’s Edition. Limited to 50,000 units this set is a rancor-sized package including all of the above: early access online, CD copy, additional digital content with exclusive mouse droid and Collector’s Edition store to enhance The Old Republic experience in-game. Included in the high-quality Collector’s box are some pretty special exclusives (“physical” items), sure to please fanboys and girls alike – metal case for your game discs, Old Republic map, The Journal of Master Gnost-Dural, Custom Security Authentication Key, Music of Star Wars: The Old Republic CD, and an impressive statue of Darth Malgus – perfect for casting the Shadows of the Empire across your desk while enthralled in hours of online gaming in A Galaxy Far, Far Away.
In addition to the cost of the game, which includes 30-days free play – you’ll need to fork out £8.99 per month, £25 for 3-months or £46 for six months after the trial to continue playing the MMORPG online.
Only 150 lucky fans were granted the chance to meet Davis and it’s presumed they got their copies of The Old Republic signed free-of-charge without the usually £25 charge!
Despite the excitement and anticipation for The Old Republic, the game has also upset legions of Star Wars fans, after it was suggested to be the reasoning for Sony firing the Death Star on the eight year legacy of incredibly popular online game Star Wars Galaxies when the contract between Sony and LucasArts expires this month.
