A blunder by Capcom’s cover art designers has meant that thousands of copies of spin-off Resident Evil: Revelations 3DS were actually printed in error, with the unchecked spine text reading “Revelaitons” before the copies were dispatched for sale by North American retailers last week.
Capcom has addressed the mistake and is working on making sure the next batch feature the correct title and a statement on the company’s blog reads: “As you may well have heard by now, the title of Revelations is indeed misspelled on the spine of the game box (as “Revelaitons”. Unfortunately, the initial North American shipment of the game will reflect this error, but we just got confirmation that subsequent shipments of the title are being repackaged to have the correct spelling. Meanwhile, customers who have received the misspelled version can contact our Customer Service line at 650-350-6700 or by email at accounts@capcom.com and we’ll send you a new insert for your case. So yay!”
However, these types of errors are not always a bad thing and one such mistake has in fact helped shape a lengthy career for one particular Nintendo mascot. Gaming myth tells that Shigeru Miyamoto’s classic Donkey Kong character was not intended to be known by his popular name, but actually it came about when the name “Monkey Kong” was lost in translation between Japanese and English.
The name Donkey Kong mistakenly was printed onto thousands of labels to be distributed on the gaming cartridges for US release. Without the time or means to correct the error Donkey Kong invaded the United States and this has been his western name ever since!
