The popular BBC iPlayer has been announced as one of the founding services on the Roku internet and streaming media gadget which will be winging its way to the UK after enjoying a few successful years in the United States.
The Roku will come in two versions, the Roku 2 XS and the Roku LT and both will bolster our televisions services bringing unique content and domestic services such as LoveFilm and now the Beebs online on-demand and catch-up programming library. The digital TV hub maker’s European VP Clive Hudson says “Roku recognises the importance of region-specific programmes so today we are excited to announce the addition of BBC iPlayer to our platform”. He adds “This is among the first of many significant content partnerships for Roku in Europe and we look forward to making additional announcements in the coming weeks.”
Roku devices, as mentioned above, will come in two formats both expected in this half of the year. The Roku 2 XS will be the up-market version boasting 1080p video output, Wi-Fi and a motion controlled Bluetooth game mode with MicroSD support for the extra bit of storage. This one is set to cost around £100. The second, titled Roku LT, as you might imagine is the light version featuring a respectable 720p output via HDMI and Wi-Fi, its set to cost £80.
