It would seem that Apple has finally buckled under the pressure regarding the naming of the mobile data version of the new iPad.
Following a string of complaints across the world, mainly in the UK and Australia, Apple have decided to remove the term ‘4G’ from the new iPad which is able to access a mobile data connection.
As you may be aware, Apple were in fact sued in Australia due to using the term ‘4G’, which has come to be known as LTE, and the successor to current 3G infrastructure. Customers in Australia decided to sue the Cupertino company due to the fact that the iPad (which has the capabilities to allow for super-fast mobile data access) doesn’t in fact work on Australia’s LTE network. Instead, the LTE capabilities that are built-in to the new iPad will only work in the US and Canada on select networks. Now, Apple did actually mention this on their website, however this was not deemed acceptable in the eyes of Australian users, therefore decided to sue Apple for misrepresentation.
A few weeks back, Apple acknowledged that the marketing for the iPad 4G in Australia may be misleading to some customers and stopped using it. However, Apple have now decided to start removing all mention of the term 4G from the new iPad in other countries too, so far this includes: UK, Australia, the U.S., Canada, UAE, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, New Zealand, Malaysia, Ireland, and Hong Kong. The renamed iPad Wi-Fi + 4G version will now simply be called iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular instead.
Just in case you were wondering, the iPad 2 + 3G will be unaffected, as unlike the ‘4G’ version on the new iPad, the 3G capabilities on the iPad 2 does in fact work around the world.
