LG has finally spilled the beans on its beautiful 55-inch OLED TV, letting us know the price tag and release time.
If you saw the TV back at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year, then no doubt you would have instantly looked at the TV you’ve currently got and felt disappointed, just as we did. This TV features the latest type of screen panel called an ‘OLED’, which means it can be thinner and brighter than any other TV in the world right now.
OLED televisions are pretty rare right now, and as such LG’s new offering is the world’s largest at a whopping 55-inches. The TV features a tiny bezel that’s so thin you can barely see it – this TV looks to be all screen. It’s also the thinnest of its kind in the world at a razor-thin 7mm – that’s thinner than the HTC One S, the thinnest smartphone in the world!
The bad news is that the price of OLED televisions is still as sky-high as LCD ones were when they first hit the market a long time ago. If you thought Samsung’s latest all-singing-all-dancing ES8000 TV was expensive at £2500 for the 55-inch model, think again. LG says you’ll need to fork out a whopping €9000 for the privilege of owning its new TV.
That price tag puts it in the same realm as Toshiba’s new 55-inch glasses-free 3D TV, the ZL2, which is priced at a cool £7000.
We’ll be able to feast our eyes on this beauty in stores and showrooms as of July, but due to the extortionate price you’ll need to pre-order one for delivery in order to get one. LG promises that you’ll get one before Christmas 2012 if you pre-order, but doesn’t state exactly when.
It’s estimated that only 50,000 OLED televisions will be sold this year, but we have to bear in mind that this is the very beginning for the new TV tech. We’ve moved on from LCD to LED screens, which are proving more popular by the day, and soon we’ll be enjoying the benefits of OLED.
Now, has anyone got a spare £9000 we can borrow?
