Microsoft’s forthcoming Windows 8 operating system has been trumpeted as a next-generation OS for devices of all types, embracing multi-touch products, such as tablets, in particular.
Samsung was the first manufacturer to stake its claim in the emerging Windows 8 tablet market, and Microsoft chose to use Samsung tablets to run early versions of Windows 8, which it gave out to attendees of its developer conference.
Other manufacturers are also interested however, with the likes of Dell, Acer and Toshiba already having Windows 8 tablets on the way. Windows 8 isn’t due to launch until later in the year, in time for Christmas, but unfortunately for Dell, it’s first tablet to run the OS has leaked prematurely online.
It’s called the Latitude 10, adding to the company’s already existing range of Latitude Windows laptops. As the model number suggests, the screen size is 10 inches – 10.1-inches to be precise – with capacitive multi-touch gesture support and a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. As far as tablet screens go, this one is decidedly average.
Windows 8 tablets will run on one of two processor types – either Intel or ARM – and this one uses an Intel chip, the Clover Trail Atom dual-core. Unfortunately the clock speed isn’t shown on the leaked specification sheet, although we can safely say this piece of ‘confidential’ information looks to be as real as it gets.
Graphics are onboard and provided by Intel, while memory is a very decent 2GB of RAM along with various SSD storage options which run up to 128GB. SSD storage on a tablet could prove to make such a device extremely quick to boot up and both read and write files, but it’s also likely to bump the price up.
The Dell Latitude 10 has an 8-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel front facing option, both of which should provide high quality images. There’s also the usual Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, plus a very cool-sounding fingerprint reader and smart card scanner for locking and unlocking the device.
It also features a tablet rarity, a removable and swappable battery. Two battery types are available: one which provides between 6-8 hours battery life and one which will extend to 10-12 hours.
Rumours point to the Dell Latitude 10 launching later in the year alongside Windows 8 itself.
