Sony Announces Xperia Tipo and Tipo Dual Smartphones for Beginners

Oh, how foolish we were to think that Sony would stick with the Xperia S, U, and P as its three phones for this year. After revealing the Xperia Ion HSPA and Xperia miro earlier this week, the Japanese giant has now revealed the Xperia Tipo and Xperia Tipo Dual.

Both phones are very similar, and as you might expect, the Tipo Dual is a dual-SIM version of the Tipo. This model is Sony’s first ever dual-SIM phone, and is designed for those who run two different numbers, allowing a business and personal SIM to be used in the same phone at once. You won’t be able to use both SIMs at the same time though; you’ll need to reboot and switch between the two when necessary.

Other than an extra SIM slot, both phones are identical. They’re aimed more at the smartphone beginner, with a small and curvy frame and low-end features. They feature a 3.2-inch HVGA touchscreen with a protective glass cover, an 800MHz processor and a 3.2-megapixel rear camera with no LED flash.

There’s 2.9GB of internal storage for your snaps, apps and other content, and room for expansion using the micro SD card slot. Connectivity comes in the form of Micro USB for charging and syncing, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and HSPA for 3G connectivity.

Despite being on the low end of the specification scale, Sony has gifted users with the latest version of Android – version 4.0 aka Ice Cream Sandwich. This will give your Xperia S-toting mates something to be jealous about, although it’s probably the only one-up you’ll have on them if you own the Xperia Tipo.

Both phones will launch between July and September, available in Classic Black, Classic White, Deep Red and Navy Blue. Prices haven’t been confirmed yet, but we’ll update you when we know.
