BBC Launches 3G Sports Coverage on Mobile Devices

[tab name=’News’]

It has been announced by the BBC this week that the corporation has started to roll out its streaming sports coverage which will be suitable for use on 3G networks here in the UK.

According to a BBC Blog post, they have been busy testing the new system during the first week of Euro 2012, and it’s now ready to be tried out by the consumer.

So, if you’re preparing to watch the game tonight between England and Sweden which is being broadcast by the BBC, you’ll be able to watch the game live directly on your mobile. In addition, you’ll also be able to watch highlights of games and on-demand video too.

All this will work either using a Wi-Fi connection, and when you’re out and about on your 3G connection as well. At the moment, the new streaming service will work on iPhone, iPad iPod Touch with iOS 5.0 or above, and Android devices with 2.2 or above. Unfortunately though there is no mention of support for Windows Phone users.

Along with the new streaming capabilities on offer, the BBC has also updated its mobile sport website to bring it in line with the design of the main site which was updated back in February this year.  The design of the mobile sports site has been developed using an approach called ‘responsive design’, this means that the website can adapt to different screen sizes and capabilities in order to get the best possible experience from the site.

The site will certainly be busy with this year’s line-up of sport – not only will you be able to watch the Euros but also other sporting events including Wimbledon, Formula One, the Open Golf and of course not forgetting the Olympics. For the London 2012 Olympics, the BBC will also be releasing a dedicated app for both Android and iOS which will allow you to watch up to 24 live video streams as well as viewing detailed schedules of events and also results.

The BBC has acknowledged that with such a wide range of smartphones and tablets on the market, there may be a few bugs that need to be ironed out. They are very much interested in receiving feedback should you be experiencing any problems.
