Sony’s PlayStation 3 console will receive a new firmware update later on today, which adds in a new power saving setting.
While the feature is designed to prevent electricity being unnecessarily wasted, we’re sure it’s going to confuse some people out there and could even cause gamers to think their console might be faulty.
The update adds in a setting that will cause the console to turn itself off if it hasn’t been used for one hour. So if you leave your game paused and pop out to the shops, only to come back to find it off, don’t panic – unless you didn’t save your game that is.
This setting has been added to ensure the console complies with new SCEE regulations, and if you find it an inconvenience then don’t worry; it can be turned off by heading into Settings and then System Auto-Off.
You’ll be able to recognise the update by its version number: 4.20. Asides from the power saving setting, Sony says there’s also a bunch of other improvements to make the console better. For example, saved games can now be selected in multiples and moved in batch, saving you that painful task of copying and pasting them one by one.
Finally, audio has been bumped with some improvements in 4.20 – Virtual Surround Sound is now compatible with wireless stereo headsets, perfect for watching a movie on DVD or Blu-ray. Users of the official wireless headset gain the ability to alter the volume level of their own voice feedback, or just turn it off completely.
So just remember, if your PS3 is turning itself off after an hour, it’s normal! Just turn the System Auto-Off setting off in the settings menu.
