Thought the Galaxy Note was too big? Wait ‘til you feast your eyes on the Galaxy Note 10.1. Granted, it’s a full-sized tablet that’s making no attempts to pretend to be a smartphone as well, but it’s still a beast.
Some of you may remember the Galaxy Note 10.1 from a distant time in your memory – it was officially announced back in February of this year, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Not so long after Samsung announced the tablet, Apple showed up with its Retina Display-boasting iPad 3, or ‘New iPad’. At this point it seemed that Samsung went back to the drawing board, delaying the launch of the Note 10.1 indefinitely.
Samsung’s plans soon became apparent, when whispers of an upgraded model started making their way onto the interwebs. The device has now been finalised, and will launch worldwide later this month for stylus-loving tablet users everywhere. So what has Samsung changed?
The Galaxy Note 10.1 now packs a quad-core Exynos processor running at 1.4GHz, along with a stonking 2GB of RAM – that’s double the number of processing cores and double the RAM when compared to the original specs shown off at MWC earlier in the year.
Unfortunately the screen remains the same; a 10.1 inch display with a fairly low resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. Samsung is known for making impressive AMOLED displays with high resolutions, but unfortunately the processor used limits the screen resolution somewhat.
Of course, with the Note range being aimed at productivity, Samsung has added in some interesting looking features, such as split screen app usage. Similar to Windows 7, two apps can be opened and used side-by-side at the same time.
The delay between the original announcement and its release will again benefit users, this time in the software department. Time spent in development means that the operating system running on the Note 10.1 will be Android 4.0, also known as Ice Cream Sandwich. Samsung’s customary TouchWiz user interface runs over the top, and at the moment we’re not sure if there will be an update to Jelly Bean.
Look out for the Galaxy Note 10.1 in stores by the end of this month!
