Well Nintendo has put a proverbial boot up its own backside, with the company’s President Satoru Iwata making the news in many ways today, all surrounding the Nintendo Wii U console. Already Nintendo has confirmed not one but two software updates that will fix some of the issues with the new console, along with a new virtual console system that will allow Wii U consoles to download and play classic SNES and NES games.
And as with all things Nintendo, the company cannot go for a big announcement without a certain moustached plumber being involved…
Iwata announced that Mario himself will be making a big appearance at this summer’s E3 gaming expo in not one, not two, but three games, all of which will make their debut at E3 2013.
Nintendo will show off a new Mario 3D game alongside the next Super Smash Bros. game and, as the cherry on the bun, it will also show off the new Mario Kart game, all of which are for the next gen Wii U console.
The news came during a Nintendo Direct conference this morning where Satoru Iwata said that at E3 the company would show the “first screens” of the next Smash Bros. game which will be coming to both the Wii U and the 3DS.
He also announced that a new 3D Mario game for the Wii U is in development from the team that previously developed Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Super Mario 3D Land, EAD Tokyo. The 3D Mario game will come to E3 in a playable form, as will the next instalment in the Mario Kart franchise.
The news is great as one of the major gripes with the Wii U launch was a lack of “Top Tier” games that games normally expected from Nintendo. Today’s announcement has been the first time that a new 3D Mario and Mario Kart has been mentioned for the Wii U so it’s all big news that there will be playable versions of the games in June.
More specifics have not been confirmed, so for now we will be waiting for E3, which takes place in Los Angeles between June 11th and 13th.
