The first software update for BlackBerry 10 has started to roll out, bringing a host of improvements and fixes for those who have eagerly picked up the BlackBerry Z10 already.
At 150MB in size, update version 10.0.10.85 is a fairly hefty one, and that’s because it addresses some rather major issues that have cropped up since the OS’ launch at the end of January.
One big complaint from early Z10 adopters was battery life – the phone wasn’t lasting much longer than 12 hours for some, which is obviously a pain, especially if you rely on the phone for work and business travel. BlackBerry says it has addressed this problem with the new update, so hopefully users will see their battery life improve to something more satisfactory.
The Canadian company says it has worked with 60 different ways of optimising battery life, with heavy users in particular promised a longer average battery cycle by BlackBerry.
Elsewhere on the phone, the camera performance is said to be improved. In particular, shooting in low light should be better, according to BlackBerry. The Z10 has an impressive camera, but we found that many of our shots were just too dark, and snaps at dusk were far too grainy and dim. Thankfully this looks to be fixed with the update and we’re already seeing improvements.
Elsewhere in the update BlackBerry has improved video playback inside the browser, Google Calendar sync, call logging, contacts sync and performance with third party apps.
We’d recommend making sure you’re connected to Wi-Fi before finding the update, which you can do by going into Settings > Software Updates > Check for Updates.
