Tesco launches free Clubcard TV service powered by BlinkBox

Tesco has launched its new Clubcard TV service, which is set to provide free on-demand movies, television and entertainment free to Tesco Clubcard customers after the company signed a deal with BBC Worldwide to stream and show its content.

The TV service will be powered by Tesco’s own BlinkBox service and will target customers with television content depending on what they purchasing with a Clubcard… which is odd!

Customers with the Clubcard TV service will be able too see content such as cookery programs, comedy and even movies, with deals from production companies such as Aardman, Endemol and Warner Bros already inked in. The service will be advert-based, and so using the information Tesco garners from your purchasing there will be a host of adverts streamed to you with your interests in mind.

Logging onto the service is simple as all you’ll need is your details and a Tesco Clubcard (which you can get for free online), then once registered you will have access to a host of free TV including classics like The Wind in the Willows, Supersized vs Super Skinny, TOWIE and even TMNT.

Film-wise there is a host of slightly older films available like The Assassination of Jesse James, Ocean’s Eleven and Shawshank Redemption. Now it’s not very current stuff but it is a great free alternative and a good base for entertainment.

Currently you can only access the service via the website, but we can imagine that Tesco will be working on console, mobile and tablet-based apps as well as mobile websites for the future.

Tesco owns an 80 per cent stake in Blinkbox which is most likely the reason for Clubcard TV. We can also expect the service to grow pretty fast so that Tesco can try take on the likes of LoveFilm and Netflix in the future.
