Samsung’s soon to be announced rugged smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active, has leaked ahead of schedule in the shade of Teal.
Those serial leakers over at @Evleaks came up with the goods, delivering a couple of press images of the Galaxy S4 Active via Twitter over two weeks ahead of Samsung’s June 20th event, where the phone is expected to be officially revealed.
The phone you’re looking at is said to be finished in ‘Teal’ and is heading to US mobile network AT&T, although the same Twitter page also leaked a press image of the phone in black, also with the AT&T branding. We prefer the Black, but the Teal is pretty nice, too!
From the image above it’s easy to see that the SGS4A keeps the same size and shape as the original S4, but the design has been altered a lot to make the phone tough and rugged, hence the ‘Active’ name. The front fascia and back panel now appear to be brushed metal instead of plastic, and there are three physical buttons below the display to take care of the ‘back’, ‘home’ and ‘apps’ functions. This phone is designed for use underwater and so obviously Samsung’s usual capacitive touch buttons here just wouldn’t work.
The emphasis on underwater use is reinforced by the image on the phone’s screen, showing an underwater picture being taken using the ‘Aqua’ shooting mode. It looks as though Samsung will follow Sony’s suit and focus on underwater snaps and video at pool parties and the like when it comes to advertising, just as Sony did with the Xperia ZR.
With four screws holding the back panel of the phone in place this looks to be a seriously tough cookie. However, with a 5-inch Full HD display, 8 megapixel camera and quad-core 1.9GHz Snapdragon 600 processor it’s also going to be a very powerful device. We’ll find out more on June 20th at Samsung’s event.
