Ubisoft suffers web site hack – User data potentially taken

French games developer Ubisoft has revealed that it has (once again) been the victim of a hack where user data may have been taken from the company’s systems.

Ubisoft is currently on a high with its Assassin’s Creed franchise of games and the incoming Watch Dog, though it revealed yesterday that security had been compromised by an unknown party.

An undisclosed number of its users’ accounts have been compromised and data has been taken, but Ubisoft has been quick to confirm that that no personal payment information is stored with them, so fortunately all credit/debit card information is safe from this intrusion.

In the full statement Ubisoft said:

“We recently discovered that one of our Web sites was exploited to gain unauthorized access to some of our online systems. We instantly took steps to close this off and to begin a thorough investigation with the relevant authorities, internal and external security experts, and to start restoring the integrity of any systems that may have been compromised.”

“During this process, we learned that data had been illegally accessed from our account database, including user names, email addresses and encrypted passwords. It’s important to note that no personal payment information is stored with Ubisoft, so fortunately all credit/debit card information was safe from this intrusion.”

“As a result, we are recommending that everyone with a Ubisoft account changes their password. You can do so by clicking the link here.”

“We would also recommend that you change your password on any other Web site or service where you use the same or a similar password to help ensure the safety of your personal information.”

Back in 2010 the company experienced another security breach, right about the time of the big Sony PSN data hack that landed the company in some hot water. At the time a consortium of hackers known as Skid Row claimed responsibility for the site hack in protest over a policy that required gamers to have a constant internet connection to play their games. Sound familiar?

So if you have signed up to any of the Ubisoft U accounts or associated websites then you may want to get online ASAP to change your details. We thoroughly recommend changing your password as a first port of call.
