Rovio & Hasbro Join Forces for Angry Birds Star Wars II with Interactive Toys

Mobile games developer Rovio and veteran toy maker Hasbro have joined Forces to announce the sequel to the popular Angry Birds Star Wars which will combine app play with toy play when the game is released on app markets worldwide on September the 19th.

Angry Birds Star Wars II will once more be set in a Galaxy Far, Far Away feature up to 30 new characters referencing the prequel trilogy Episodes I, II and III and will introduce heroic birds and villainous pigs based on characters such as the Jedi, Qui Gon Jinn and Obi Wan Kenobi and Sith lords, Darth Maul and Darth Sidious (or Pigious, perhaps?)

As well as the app itself, which will blast off on popular platforms such as Android and Apple iOS, a range of ‘TelePods’ will bring a new dimension of interaction in the Angry Birds Star Wars game.

The more of these plastic figurines you buy from toy retailers and connect to the app the more playable characters are unlocked within the app game for smartphones and tablets. This line-up of 30 toys and bases will be highly collectable (and highly profitable) and remind us of the likes of Skylanders and the upcoming Disney Infinity game.

Along with the character TelePods we can expect the high street shelves to fill with the usual tie-in plush toys and assorted must-have merchandising as Angry Birds Star Wars II prepares to launch on September 19th. Until then here’s the trailer!
