Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for Galaxy S now available

  • by

Reports are coming in confirming that customers are receiving the Android Gingerbread 2.3 update for Samsung Galaxy S smartphones.

Samsung confirmed just over a week ago that the update would be coming in the middle of this month, and they actually meant it! Customers in Germany, Holland, Norway and others are currently getting their update on, with the rollout expected to move across Europe to the other countries throughout today and tomorrow.

Gingerbread is the latest version of Android software for smartphones, and is version 2.3. Not to be confused of course with Android version 3.0, codenamed Gingerbread, which at present is exclusively used for tablet devices such as the Motorola Xoom.

If you have a Galaxy S and can’t wait to get it updated to Gingerbread, hook it up to your PC via USB and fire up the Kies desktop software. If the update has reached you, you’ll see a pop-up telling you there’s an update waiting for your handset. Simply click update, and Kies will do the rest for you!

UPDATE: Vodafone UK have just released their own branded version of the Gingerbread update. Other UK networks state that the update is “imminent” for their customers.
