Apple is now selling an £80 battery boosting accessory for its most recent iPhone line-up which will allow longer use of key features including calls, Wi-Fi, 4G and Bluetooth connectivity.
The Apple Smart Battery case is made of microfiber and flexible elastomer for protection and slips on and syncs with the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6S to offer up to 25 hours of battery life, which is around 10 hours more than the average heavy user would experience on the smartphone’s lithium ion battery alone.
When using the Smart Battery case it will also display on screen notifications to advise charge status on the device and the pack and also any connected Bluetooth gadgets, such as the Apple Watch. The case can be recharged on the usual Apple Lightening cable while still affixed to the iPhone, which itself will also get a full charge.
The idea is a wise one but the design, which features a bulbous backside, leaves much to be desired. It may seem a bit of a backpedal to add extra bulk to the iPhone 6 and 6S, what with Apple’s intent on making it’s devices thinner and lighter in recent years but it’s been suggested that the aim of the Smart Battery case is to offer a genuine manufacturer approved solution to waning battery life, which of course also deters iPhone users from buying cheaper, third party alternatives.
