By our calculations we’re a good eight or nine months away from a new iPhone being revealed by Apple, but that doesn’t mean the Cupertino Company hasn’t already started work on its next project. App developers already know what Apple is working on, and it’s called the iPhone 6.
Shortly after the launch of the iPhone 5 the inevitable whispers started, with the main focus being what the next iPhone would be called. Going by Apple’s previous naming traditions, the next iPhone should in theory be called the iPhone 5S. However, the name of Apple’s next phone that has been showing up in developer’s app logs is the iPhone 6.
Developers are able to see which devices their apps are being used with, and recently there’s been a new kid on the block; the iPhone 6.1. Before the launch of the iPhone 5, Apple was testing two devices known as the iPhone 5.1 and iPhone 5.2, so it would seem that by proxy the next phone will in fact be the iPhone 6.
Further to the new device, it also seems as though Apple is testing a brand new operating system to accompany it. The obvious choice would be iOS 7, and that’s the name that’s showing up alongside the new iPhone. Exactly what the new software entails is anyone’s guess right now, but you can bet that Apple is working to bring a host of new features to compliment a new iPhone.
So who exactly is testing this mystery ‘iPhone 6.1’ device? Well, The Next Web has proved the device is being used at Apple’s Cupertino, California headquarters by tracing its IP address. It’s possible that somebody out there could have done some tweaking to put a mock ‘iPhone 6.1’ on record, but the location of the device itself looks to prove that something is afoot over at Apple HQ.
There is of course every chance that Apple will end up naming the device the iPhone 5S, but perhaps this year things will change.
