Olympic fever is about to kick off ahead of this year’s summer games which will take place in London for the first time since 1948. The events will be shown on BBC in both the standard and high definition television formats – as well as broadcasting for those lucky enough to own 3D sets. Subscription services from Sky and Virgin are now getting in shape to deliver some of the action to their customers when the games begin on Friday 27th July.
First off the mark the Beeb has grabbed the rights to show the traditionally grandiose opening ceremonies, as well as the event’s close on Sunday 12th August and will also be showing 24 coverage of the action across its two primary channels and BBC iPlayer. This amounts to around 5000 hours of live competition.
Sky and Virgin will offer an additional 8 hours of live sports and 4 hours of pre-recorded highlights in a new depth and dimension through a newly launched Eurosport 3D channel. An on-demand service will also become available and ESPN will also be covering the event for non-3D subscribers.
