Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was only launched for public sale this past Tuesday in the UK and US but has already gained over $400 million in earnings, beating preceeding MW2 by over $90 million worldwide – and bear in mind we said that’s only the UK and US.
The shooter’s launch is said to have eclipsed that of Star Wars and Lord of The Rings in anticipation, hype and sales in the domain of popular media, with a star-studded red carpet launch and publisher Activision’s CEO Bobby Kotick stating “We believe the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the biggest entertainment launch of all time in any medium, and we achieved this record with sales from only two territories. Other than Call of Duty, there has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row.
MW3 also broke records online with the highest amount of gamers on the Xbox LIVE community at any one time as the Call of Duty social network Elite, which allows gamers to share stats, scores and gain weapons in the COD universe, was also launched. And, of course, we reported yesterday that Kotick confirms that more Call of Duty will be coming in 2012 – it’s far from game over!
