E3 2011: Tomb Raider – Lara Croft taken back to her origins in down and dirty gameplay preview

Crystal Dynamics took the stage at the Microsoft keynote for Xbox 360 at the E3 Conference in Los Angeles to show off their reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise – which will take Lara Croft back to her origins in a realistically gritty reimagining of the popular title.

In the gameplay demoed during the short presentation we catch up with a disoriented Ms. Croft, awakening in the bowels of a shipwreck. She’s not the Lara we remember. Not yet anyway.

Unskilled and running on survival instincts alone she travels fearfully through the depths of the sunken wreck, narrating to us breathlessly as she passes hanging corpses, flees attackers in the shadows and gets down and dirty with contraptions in the claustrophic corridors and tunnels – it’s clear that this game carries a much darker tone than the previous and somewhat cartoonish preceeding titles.

Finally, like the Tomb Raider franchise itself, Lara breaks free into daylight – reborn and ready to face a new generation of challenges on the Xbox 360 console this November.
