Research in Motion has officially announced a new and exclusive BlackBerry smartphone in Dubai this afternoon, the Porsche Design P9981.
We’ve seen this phone leak in pictures and videos online before, going under the code name of the BlackBerry Knight 9980. As you can see from the image above, it looks very futuristic and unlike any other BlackBerry.
BlackBerry and Porsche Design have teamed up to build an exclusive and different smartphone which is based on the touch and type format found in the awesome BlackBerry Bold 9900.
The new P9981 has very similar specifications to the Bold 9900 – the same touchscreen, a 1GHz processor, 8GB of internal storage, 5-Megapixel camera and the latest BlackBerry OS 7 software.
Aesthetically however, this phone is completely different and has been designed with a premium look in mind by Porsche Design. The keyboard has been redesigned in and crafted from stainless steel, with each key separated in half to give two functions, eliminating the need for the ‘Alt’ key.
The back of the handset is covered in smooth black leather, which we have to say looks much classier than the black plastic and carbon fibre effect used on the Bold 9900.
Porsche Design have added little touches to the front of the phone just to make sure you know they were behind it, such as the font used on each key is the same font used in the PORSCHE DESIGN logo that is emblazoned across the top of the screen.
The P9981 is certainly an eye catcher, and should be available in Porsche stores by the end of the year. We can’t think of many Porsche stores in the UK, but we’d love to get our hands on this smartphone. Fingers crossed.
