The concept of the wearable gadget has been patiently bubbling under the surface of the tech community for a while now, but now it looks like it’s finally erupted, with wearables exploding onto the market from nearly every manufacturer, plus some new faces too.
Microsoft of course has to get on board with the new trend, and although they haven’t yet got as far as an ultra trendy, cutting edge smartwatch, a fitness wearable has been outed as being the newest gadget with app compatibility with Windows Phone devices. The upcoming app was promised by FitBit last month, and arrived on Monday of this week.
The FitBit range, whose products admittedly has been out for a while now, is being given complete and comprehensive compatibility with the Windows Phone range via a handy app, which is now free to download from the Windows Phone’s native app store. The FitBit selection itself comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes, from clip-on dongles such as the FitBit Zip, FitBit One and Fitbit Ultra, and also wristbands such as the FitBit Force and FitBit Flex.
The most common features on all of these devices are sleep tracking, fitness management and of course the pedometer for tracking footsteps taken, then review your information online, since the devices are ultra-lightweight and don’t often include a display. The app coming to Windows Phone also allows you to enter and track your calorie intake from a 350,000 strong list of popular foods.
The features of FitBit are incredibly useful to keep track of your activity and sleep, monitor both, and then help you plan accordingly in order to keep in shape. Additionally, the sheer amount of devices from the manufacturer is high at best, with old and new models nearly always boasting the core features and compatibility the user needs. With the new app for Windows Phone, users of Microsoft smartphones can finally taste victory in the endless battle between fitness and leisure.
FitBit’s native Windows Phone app requires the new Windows Phone 8.1 update (available now in the US and towards the end of the month for UK users), plus the Lumia Cyan update which has also just come out, also only for the US. European users should be able to get hold of all these updates soon.
