Who remembers the 8-Bit wonder that was the Game Boy Camera?
Released back in 1998, many actually forget that the coolest clip-on accessory for the original Nintendo portable was in fact the first ever digital camera to hit the market and we’ve come a long way since – only to now come full-circle with this amazing retro-themed app which brings nostalgic pic-snapping to iPhone.
The “8-Bit Pocket Camera” app can be bought from the Apple for less than one US Dollar, and despite not being officially recognized by Nintendo it comes along with the same style interface, viewfinder and a range of “special effects” in 4-shades of grey low resolution – just like the pocket picture gadget from childhood.
Sadly, some much-loved Game Boy Camera features are absent, including Stamps, Printer and mini-games such as face capture game “Space Fever” – which in retrospect was a very primitive version of one of the in-built Nintendo 3DS games recently popping up.
What the smartphone 8-Bit app lacks it makes up for with some pretty cool 21st century twists. The old swivel cam is gone in place of the iPhones front and rear facing cameras and the app allows your monochrome snaps to be directly uploaded to Facebook and Twitter.
A nice little app with a big nostalgia kick! Available from the Apple App Store now for the diminutive fee of 99c – you know it’s still more fun than your 5 megapixel shooter any day!
