Google Maps 5.7 for Android now features public transport navigation

Arguably one of the best free apps available for Android (well that’s certainly my opinion anyway), is getting yet another very useful feature and a whole bunch of other improvements.

The big new feature of this latest version of Google Maps is something Google are calling Transit Navigation, which pretty much does what it says on the tin. Transit Navigation will allow users to find their way to public transportation networks of over 400 cities around the world.

The new Transit Navigation feature uses your location to figure out your desired route, it will then alert you as to when you need to get off the bus or train, or when you need to make a transfer. It also cleverly works in the background allowing you to use other apps, and will place notifications about the next stop along the status bar.

Along with this new feature, users can expect to get updated directions and search suggestions, and also a new photo viewer within the “Place” pages. Don’t forget to check out the video below for a quick demo on how the new feature works.
